Wiltshire and the surrounding area is rich in sites of special interest to the local day tripper and international visitor alike. Rich in neolithic history, with standing stones dotted around the county as single sarson stones, or in the more ordered setting of a circle or henge such as the enigmatic Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. Some say that the stone circle and processional avenue at Avebury has even greater historical and religious significance and is the only circle in the country to boast a modern-day thriving village at it's centre.
Wiltshire is also the home of many of the chalk white horses that grace the higher ground and are visible for miles around. Indeed, the nearest and oldest Wiltshire white horse, at Cherhill, is what gives the pub it's name. One other white horse predates the Cherhill White Horse and by quite a period, but this is at Uffington in Oxfordshire. The White Horse Inn at Compton Bassett is the perfect place to stay whilst exploring the white horse trail.
Each year in the fields around us, from late spring through to harvest, can be found many examples of crop circles. Whether your point of view is that they are attempts at communication by beings from dimensions perhaps unseen, or that they are the result of a few too many beers by young farmers on a Friday night, you cannot but marvel at the increasing complexity and mathematical perfection of these beautiful masterpieces. Whatever your persuasion, please be aware that they are to be found in the crops on working farms, and these do affect the livelihood of many local people. So if you are visiting them, please be mindful of the countryside and the people who work there.
